چکیده

Proc. 18 International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER'99, Paris, Nov.'99), LNCS, Springer-Verlag, 1999. Federated database systems provide a homogeneous interface to possibly heterogeneous local database systems. This homogeneous interface consists of a global schema which is the result of a logical integration of the schemata of the corresponding local database systems and le systems. In this paper, we sketch the integration process and a set of tools for supporting the design process. Besides the classical database schema integration, the design process for federated information systems requires the integration of other aspects like integrity rules, authorization policies and transactional processes. This paper reports on an integrated approach to tool support of several of these integration aspects. The different integration facets are linked via the database integration method GIM allowing a high degree of automatic integration steps.

Access controls for federated database environments - taxonomy of design choices

We provide a short survey on the terminology of database security in database federations and give, as the main task, a taxonomy of the major design choices concerning access control in database federations. The taxonomy is organized in the categories granularity, authorization, and access control. Additionally, the impact of distribution, heterogeneity and autonomy, three characteristics of da...

An ORM-Driven Implementation Framework for Database Federations

Database federations are employed more and more in situations involving virtual and integrated information on demand, e.g., real-time integration of two databases. Heterogeneity in hardware and software platforms, as well heterogeneity in underlying semantics of participating local databases, makes it a hard challenge to design a consistent and well-performing global database federation. The OR...

A metadata approach to multimedia database federations

Recent research in federated database systems has advanced in the direction of federations of multimedia databases. However, in each project studied, there has been little emphasis placed on the subject of meta-models. Conversely, standard database systems (relational, object-relational and object-oriented) define metadata models that lack multimedia and federation features. In this paper, a sp...

Cost Modeling and Estimation for OLAP-XML Federations

The ever-changing data requirements of today’s dynamic businesses are not handled well by current OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP) systems. Physical integration of unexpected data into OLAP systems is a long and time-consuming process, making logical integration, or federation, the better choice in many cases. The increasing use of XML, e.g. in business-to-business (B2B) applications, sugges...

Federation views as a basis for querying and updating database federations

This paper addresses the problem of how to query and update so-called database federations. A database federation provides for tight coupling of a collection of heterogeneous component databases into a global integrated system. This problem of querying and updating a database federation is tackled by describing a logical architecture and a general semantic framework for precise specification of...
